Additional Culture Details
At WP Engine we’re helping our customers win online - a big part of how we’re able to do that is through transparent communications. Turning inside the company, by showing employees the financial “big picture,” they can better put into context the decisions our executives make. The transparency connects them to the why – and that understanding propels them to act. When employees understand the “why” they can also better understand our established processes. This impacts everything from our extremely low net churn to our world class net promoter score to the multiple industry accolades that we have won for our customer service organization, affiliate program, content program, company executives and company culture.
How do we operationalize this transparency? Twice a year we have a company “All Hands” meeting where every one of our nearly 450 employees around the world come to Austin to hear about what’s worked, what hasn’t, to celebrate our culture award winners and to hear about the strategy for the next 6 mos. Every week we do a company “Town Hall” meeting and connect every office via video to share updates, wins, questions and “intro stories,” which every new employee has to give in front of the whole company. From a managerial standpoint, we receive hours of Arbinger training which encourages every manager to take a “growth mindset” with his/her employees. Every manager meets with his/her direct reports every week to discuss progress against KPIs.
When you commit to transparency and open communication, having everyone aligned around the brand ensures that ALL employees hear what’s really going on, in a controlled and consistent way, by their managers. This, in turn, leads to organizational consistency around goals. With the same messages resonating across the entire employee base, the same goals communicated to everyone, employees are motivated to respond in tandem.
Lastly, transparency leads to faster, more efficient execution. Good execution depends on good alignment - when all areas of a company: marketing, sales, product, HR, finance, customer support and others understand exactly what’s required they can act in a more coordinated and collaborative fashion.
For startups transparency is especially important - employees will stick by a company through thick and thin if they know what's going on and have a shared vision of the path to success - our extremely low employee churn numbers from above bear this out.
