Fifty years ago, brothers Bob and Bruce Toll made their dream a reality when they built their first home under the Toll Brothers name. Constructed outside of Philadelphia, the modest home sold for $17,900. Since then, we’ve grown from a company of two employees to the nation’s leading builder of luxury homes, with more than 5,000 employees. We are proud to be a part of the Dallas community since 1995.
We understand the challenge of maintaining what has made us successful while also changing and adapting as we see incredible growth. We “honor our history” by telling stories and sharing lessons we’ve learned over the years. We know that the leaders and legends who built Toll can teach us a lot about the principles and values that should guide us as we grow and diversify.
Ask a Toll Brothers employee what it’s like to work here, and chances are you’ll hear the word “family” somewhere in the answer. The original Toll Brothers were family, of course, and while we have grown from a single Philadelphia neighborhood to communities around the country, we have never lost having that family atmosphere.
We work hard, but we also like to have a lot of fun. A business casual environment allows employees to feel more comfortable when they come to work each day. We celebrate holidays and events in fun ways like outdoor barbeques in the summer or employee-created Haunted Houses within a corporate office. Last winter, the Dallas team held an 80’s themed holiday party, complete with 80s music and a photo booth with a fun backdrop. We also provide ways for employees to relax and recharge through our Guesthouse program – employees can stay in one of several luxury Toll Brothers homes in various vacation destinations with their friends and family for only a small fee to cover cleaning costs.
Health and well-being is important to us as well. We provide great medical benefits and opportunities to plan for the future with 401(k) savings plans and a stock purchase program. Employees are supported throughout their careers, with leaders helping their teams dream big and think about their future goals. It’s more than just a daily job here – working at Toll Brothers provides an exciting career.
“Take care of each other” is a core Value of ours, and something we practice every day. In response to last year’s terrible hurricane season, we created The Employee Assistance Fund. This internal fund helps employees during extenuating times of need. When one of our family members is going through a tough time, we all band together to support them through other ways too, such as bringing them home cooked meals or making sure to call and check in on them. We are always looking out for each other.
Toll Brothers not only supports our employees but the locations in which we build Toll Brothers communities. We proudly fundraise for the American Cancer Society through several annual charity events (our 2018 Annual Gala raised more than $1 million for cancer research), on top of many other charities such as Alex’s Lemonade Stand and the American Red Cross, just to name a few. We encourage employees to make a difference in their communities by volunteering at a local nonprofit during a work day. Employees do everything from Habitat for Humanity projects to walking dogs at their local animal shelter. Last year, the Dallas team spent a day volunteering at the North Tarrant Food Bank, where they packed more than 8,600 pounds of food into packages that were given to those in need. Giving back is truly a core part of our culture, something our founders instilled in us.
We also “delight our customers.” There are countless stories of employees who have gone above and beyond to build the home of our customers’ dreams. Our company is divided into geographic divisions where entrepreneurship is not just encouraged, it’s expected. Employees are empowered to “do the right thing” to take care of employees and customers alike. And we recognize that when we all work together, we make the company stronger and thereby “create value.” We know that our culture is a direct reflection of our success and we pride ourselves in “being the best.” Toll Brothers is one of the most awarded homebuilders in the country and for four years running has been selected as the World’s Most Admired Home Building Company by Fortune magazine.
The Executive Team is also committed to upholding and enhancing the Toll Brothers culture. In 2018, the company created a new position, Managing Director, Culture and Brand Awareness, to assist Toll Brothers in being intentional about our culture. This role is focused on helping to ensure our core values are integrated into our processes and exhibited in the behaviors of all our people. We recognize that the more we focus on the effectiveness of our leaders, creating an environment where employees are empowered and inspired will lead those same employees to serve our customers in ways that differentiate us from our competitors.
Our goal is to create an employee and customer experience that is unparalleled. While we recognize a strong culture exists already, Toll Brothers is committed to making our culture even better.
