Welcome to the International School of Portland. For over 30 years, we’ve been helping to guide and prepare today’s generation of explorers for the challenges of tomorrow. We’re the only school in the U.S. to provide full immersion in Chinese, Japanese, or Spanish under one roof.
We were the Pacific Northwest's first International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) school, which promotes strategic thinking skills and hands-on engagement, rather than memorization and passive learning. This instills a true love of learning within children, and equips them to pursue knowledge throughout life.
Our small classes and international faculty provide a warm, multicultural environment that engages students in academics and the arts. We educate approximately 400 students in preschool through 5th grade.

Purpose
Since the International School of Portland's founding in 1990, it has brought together people from many countries and backgrounds for the shared mission of developing bilingual global citizens. This common purpose has drawn staff and families into a culture of community and support for one another. Thanks to small classes, students and teachers develop very close relationships and affection that lasts well beyond the school year and a child’s graduation.
The school’s International Baccalaureate (IB) Learner Profile helps knit the entire community together, establishing a common vocabulary and expectations for how we interact with one another. Students explicitly learn about and practice these expectations through collaborative problem-solving and reflection, multi-grade assemblies, events, in classrooms, on the playground, in hallways, and during transition times. The overall goal is to help students bridge the Learner Profile traits from school to home, community, and throughout their lives.
