Additional Culture Details
The Container Store believes in staying true to its seven Foundation Principles™ — simple business philosophies that guide each decision the retailer makes. It’s this culture that includes a tremendous commitment to communication, training and career development, that allows the retailer to execute its solutions-based approach to retail. Each full-time, first-year employee receives 266 hours of training — compared to the industry average of seven hours. A first-year, part-time employee receives 178 hours of training and this training continues throughout an employee’s career. The Container Store pays its salespeople 50 to 100 percent higher than retail industry average (they don’t work on commission) and salespeople often work in teams to solve customers’ unique challenges. The company has 5,000 employees and experiences an industry-defying average turnover rate of around 10 percent (the industry average approaches 100 percent annually.) It’s for these reasons and more that The Container Store has been named by FORTUNE magazine to its annual list of 100 Best Companies to Work For®, 17 years in a row.
