The credit union movement started with the idea of people helping people by pooling savings and making loans to neighbors and co-workers.
As a not-for-profit cooperative, NIHFCU is owned and operated by its members—who own a part of the institution when they deposit funds. Since January 11, 1940, NIHFCU has helped members achieve financial independence. Founded by nine NIH federal employees seeking a cost-effective alternative to banks, the credit union began with just $75 in a shoebox. Today, it’s one of the largest in the nation, serving over 39,000 members in healthcare and related fields, offering affordable loans and banking solutions that save time and money. We now serve NIH employees, contractors, biomedical and healthcare professionals, and businesses in across the country.
