Nicollet County, named in honor of French explorer Joseph N. Nicollet, lies in south central Minnesota. The county is composed of five cities and thirteen townships. The first County board meeting was held June 27, 1853, with the first County election taking place October 11, 1853. Today, the United States Census has an estimated 34, 274 people residing in Nicollet County.
A little known fact about our County seat. The state capitol was nearly moved to St. Peter from St. Paul. However, Joseph Rollette absconded with the bill that would make St. Peter the state capitol.
