PreventEd (formerly NCADA) serves the City of Saint Louis and six surrounding counties in eastern Missouri. We work to reduce or prevent the harms of alcohol and other drug use through education, intervention and advocacy. For individuals and families struggling with substance-related problems, we offer a confidential helpline, assessments, and referrals to treatment. We also offer early-intervention to support teens (and their caregivers) who’ve encountered some difficulties with substances. Last year, we worked with 65,000 students in 250 area schools, delivering a variety of innovative prevention programs and youth leadership trainings that bring measurable, positive results. We work for comparable outcomes in communities by mobilizing coalitions and strengthening their efforts to address substance misuse in their neighborhoods. Additional Culture Details

In August 2019, we established the goal of eliminating the disparity of employee experiences at PreventEd, from hiring to retiring, within 3 years. We believe that focusing on our internal team will prepare us to better serve our clients and students. To this end, we have identified benchmarks and developed outcomes to measure our success and track our progress. To date, we have established a common language, developed an M/WBE purchasing policy, and created a budget line item for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) work.

We have engaged with Undo Bias, a consulting firm, to accompany us in our racial equity journey. They have led us in various caucusing exercises and helped us create a Racial Equity Committee in November 2019. In August 2020, the Racial Equity Committee developed and disseminated an internal survey on racial climate at the organization. Data was disaggregated by race and prompted us to create an agency-wide confidential reporting process and engage leadership at a deeper level in the DEI work.

Other ongoing DEI efforts at PreventEd include a bi-monthly book club, weekly emails highlighting the accomplishments of people of color, professional development opportunities, and processing spaces in times of unrest/unease.
