UnityPoint Health Des Moines' Methodist West Hospital opened in October 2009 as Iowa's first newly licenses hosiptal in over 50 years.
The growth and need for health care services in the western suburbs guided us to build a hospital centered on improving the patient’s experience and healing. In the five years of operation, Methodist West Hospital has been consistently in the 90th percentile for patient satisfaction, putting it in the top 10 percent of hospitals nationwide.
Patient Care Facilitators serve as the focal point of communication between patients and staff to improve care coordination. Because patients and staff were so happy with the new role it was implemented at UnityPoint Health – Des Moines’ other hospitals, Iowa Lutheran and Iowa Methodist. Another initiative that has proved to be very popular with patients is a practice called the bedside report. When our nurses do a shift handoff, it’s done in the patient’s room and involving the patient.
