Homesteaders Life Company, an Iowa-based mutual company owned by its policy holders, is a national leader providing products and services to promote and support the funding of advance funeral planning and end-of-life expenses. We market our products through a network of independent funeral homes and agents throughout the United States. Since 1906, we have been proud to work alongside funeral professionals to help families experience the value of funeral service and the benefits of planning ahead.
In 1905, 22 people gathered at the home of John E. Paul in Des Moines, Iowa to discuss the formation of a new fraternal society – the first policy of “The Homesteaders” was written in 1906. We can proudly say that in 118 years, we have never failed to pay a claim.
Homesteaders has grown significantly over the last few years as we continue to invest in key initiatives designed to help achieve our long-term goal of helping funeral homes reach more families than ever before.

Vision
As a national leader in advance funeral funding, Homesteaders’ vision is to enable prearrangement and funding for 2,000,000 additional people by 2030.
Additional Culture Details
At Homesteaders, we pride ourselves on promoting a positive work/life balance. Our employees work a 35-hour work week, and our West Des Moines office features a company subsidized cafeteria, fitness center and a scenic walking path. Our non-essential home office employees enjoy flexibility to work from home on a part-time basis for better work/life integration.
We encourage community involvement though a matching charitable gift program and volunteer time off for all employees. Homesteaders active peer recognition programs and leadership training opportunities promote employee growth and development. In 2020, Homesteaders established a Diversity and Inclusion Task Force as part of our commitment to ensuring we have a positive work environment that not only helps us achieve company success, but one where everyone feels welcome, engaged and safe. The task force is focusing its current efforts around education and community engagement.

Homesteaders offers an All-Employee Incentive Award program and a Success Share program which has averaged an additional contribution of more than 4% for the past five years.
