Additional Culture Details
The culture of HBG Design creates a framework where employees are encouraged to be highly engaged in designing their own personal and professional experience. We actively encourage employees to take ownership of their own development and set achievable goals in order to achieve their personal best. We are committed to supporting employee growth and development through challenging assignments and diverse leadership opportunities across the firm, giving staff the chance to stretch themselves while striving for excellence. We nurture leadership development through coaching programs and regular one-on-one mentoring/sponsorship meetings.
Connecting Appreciation to Reward.
HBG Design has a strong culture of appreciation that is built on actively connecting employees’ goals and accomplishments with the firm’s business goals and accomplishments. Through a structured program called “Design Dollars,” the firm focuses on building employee understanding of how their individual contributions impact the big picture. Employee achievements and contributions are recognized monthly – focusing attention to the recognition of employees who have applied the principles of the firm’s vision to their everyday actions.
During the firm’s monthly get-togethers, employees are celebrated and acknowledged with Design Dollars specific to the sphere of firm vision they impacted. As an example, if an employee is recognized for contributing to a team’s ability to reach a project milestone, they are awarded a “creating impact” design dollar. If they are recognized for solving a unique problem with a new process or creative idea, they are awarded a “fueling innovation” design dollar.
To encourage the act of appreciation and peer support, those employees who recognized co-workers also receive a Design Dollar for “rewarding excellence”. The program further instills a strong culture of appreciation while connecting individual action to the firm’s strategic vision. Design Dollars accumulate and can be used to redeem company promotional merchandise through the "Company Store".
Healthy Work-Life Blend.
HBG Design promotes a healthy work/life blend across the firm, offering a well-rounded benefits plan, year-round flexible hours for all employees, and a variety of programs designed to support the important blend between life, health, work and play. Personal fulfillment also includes engagement with co-workers in activities sponsored by HBG. We support several key events and activities from organized team walks for charity to blood drives; painting parties to kick-ball and indoor soccer teams; group nights at new restaurants to family-centered outings.
HBG Design’s outreach activities are connected under our HBGives program. HBGives includes firm-sponsored annual charitable giving; a holiday toy drive; a food drive supporting the Memphis Food Bank; and a social responsibility initiative named in honor of one of the firm’s founders, Kirk Bobo. The cornerstone of HBGives is the Kirk Bobo Creating Impact Grant, a $2500 grant awarded to a neighborhood development organization to fund a specific, well-defined revitalization/redevelopment project(s), that is combined with hands-on “sweat equity” in the form of company volunteers to accomplish project goals. The program is run completely by employee-volunteers of HBG Design, rather than firm leadership, therefore providing employees with a greater opportunity to become personally invested in the success of the KBCI Grant over the long-term.
In 2018, HBG Design completed its first Kirk Bobo Creating Impact Grant project with a local community development corporation, The Heights CDC. The project was designed and developed by employee-led volunteers and executed over six Friday afternoons. In total, HBG Design volunteers donated over 500 hours of service to create a new, safe and welcoming entry experience for The Heights’ neighborhood school, Treadwell Middle School. Firm employees have recently decided to award the 2019 KBCI Grant to the same organization to continue to make progress and create an even greater impact in The Heights community.
