Health and Welfare Council of Long Island
Established in 1947, the Health & Welfare Council of Long Island (HWCLI) is a regional nonprofit umbrella organization representing health and human service providers across Long Island. For nearly eight decades, we have worked to improve the lives of Long Island residents by advancing effective public policies, strengthening community partnerships, and delivering impactful direct services that address critical needs.
Purpose
At Health & Welfare Council of Long Island (HWCLI), our purpose is to improve the lives of Long Island residents by connecting individuals and families to essential resources, advancing equitable public policies, and strengthening the nonprofit sector. We believe every Long Islander deserves access to healthcare, nutritious food, economic opportunity, and the support needed to thrive.
Vision
We envision a stronger, healthier, and more resilient Long Island where every resident has the opportunity to achieve stability, well-being, and long-term success. Through collaboration, advocacy, and direct service, we strive to create communities where equity, opportunity, and dignity are accessible to all.
Mission
Health & Welfare Council of Long Island (HWCLI) is dedicated to improving the lives of Long Island's most vulnerable residents through a three-pronged approach:
Policy & Advocacy: We work alongside local, state, and federal leaders to advance policies that expand access to essential services, strengthen communities, and address the root causes of inequity.
Coalition Building & Grassroots Organizing: We convene nonprofits, community organizations, business leaders, advocates, and policymakers to foster collaboration, elevate community voices, and develop collective solutions to Long Island's most pressing challenges.
Direct Services: We deliver high-impact programs that connect individuals and families to critical resources, including healthcare access, nutrition assistance, disaster preparedness support, and economic stability services, helping Long Islanders reach long-term well-being.
Through this integrated approach, HWCLI not only meets immediate community needs but also works to create lasting systemic change that strengthens Long Island for generations to come.
