Mass Bay Brewing Co., Inc. (MBBC) was started in 1986 by three friends who loved drinking beer together but found the beer choices at the time to be limited. After traveling abroad and experiencing the rich European brewing and beer drinking traditions, they wanted to bring that great beer culture back home. So they built a brewery on Boston’s waterfront and started to make the beers that they wanted to drink – and then they invited their friends to the brewery to drink it with them! It was hard to imagine then what craft brewing would be today.
Though many things have changed since the early days of MBBC, much has stayed the same. We still love brewing beer and enjoying it with our friends. But one thing that has changed: in August 2014 MBBC became an employee owned company.

MBBC has over 300 employees who understand that making great beer fun can be more challenging – and more rewarding - than it seems. We do things a bit differently here; different from other companies in general and different from most of our fellow brewers. Different in this case does not mean more complex or harder to understand. Because we also believe in being simple and straightforward. We have a very short list of ‘philosophies’ that underline how we run our business:
