First Step House’s mission is to help people and families build lives of meaning, purpose, and recovery. Founded in 1958, FSH has evolved into a dual-diagnosis behavioral health treatment and housing provider for no and low-income individuals and families. We have been a consistent leader in the Salt Lake area delivering evidence-based interventions and positive outcomes for Veterans and civilians who experience behavioral health conditions, homelessness, mental illness, criminal justice involvement, and primary health concerns. We operate 2 residential treatment, 2 outpatient, and 6 transitional housing facilities in Salt Lake City, Utah and are currently in the process of building a 75-unit Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH). The scope of services we offer include substance use disorder and mental health assessment, residential and outpatient treatment, housing, case management, employment support, primary health care and dental services, peer support services, and long-term recovery management. Additional Culture Details

We utilize the Arbinger Institute's strategic planning and reporting processes to track outcomes throughout our organization and ensure that services are data-driven. Arbinger is an international training model that enables nonprofit leaders to improve management skills, ensure accountability across the organization, increase achievement of outcomes, and utilize strategic planning at every level of the organization.

Two members (FSH Associate Director and Human Resources Director) of our Executive Team are trained in facilitating and leading Arbinger trainings. They hold two-day Arbinger trainings once per month for new staff. Through the trainings, coaching, and a suite of implementation tools, they help individuals and teams move from the default self-focus of an inward mindset to the results-focus of an outward mindset. This stems from the methodology and research that organizational transformation begins with the individuals who are a part of it; shifting to an outward mindset will not only impact the person, their team, and relationship, but it will also ensure that we are providing the highest quality care to the people we serve.
