Employees Retirement System of Texas
ERS offers competitive benefits to enhance the lives of its members.
Purpose
ERS manages trust funds and benefit programs on behalf of its members. These benefits are an important part of the compensation of employees of Texas state agencies and most of Texas’ public higher education institutions.
The State of Texas and our members provide funding for the benefits, and ERS works to ensure they meet the needs of the state as an employer and the employees who conduct the state's business. ERS contributes to our members’ job satisfaction, helping state agencies and institutions recruit and retain the workforce that helps make Texas a great place to live, work, study and visit.
Day to day, ERS’ work includes:
- managing the investment of a $40 billion retirement trust fund;
- providing more than $250 million in monthly pension payments to more than 125,000 annuitants;
- overseeing almost 300,000 401(k) and 457 accounts valued at approximately $5 billion total;
- providing health insurance plans that cover more than 530,000 people and pay more than $4 billion in claims a year; and
- administering other programs, including dental and vision insurance; life and accidental death & dismemberment coverage; disability insurance; a program for physical, emotional and financial well-being; health savings accounts; and flexible spending accounts.
We strive to ensure our programs bring good value to the state and members, and to provide outstanding customer service and education so members can make the best use of the benefits to live their best lives.

Additional Culture Details
As administrators of benefits that enhance the lives of hundreds of thousands of members, ERS staff embody a mission-driven culture. We are well positioned to serve our members, with not only the professional expertise to manage our plans, but also firsthand experience as plan participants. This perspective as both experts and participants has fostered a culture ERS employees describe as “caring,” “helpful,” “member-focused,” “professional” and “ethical.”
To achieve a culture that supports our members well, ERS leadership looks beyond member services to ensure ERS employees are satisfied in their work. Engaged leadership and regular input from the employee-run Work Life Wellness Committee help ensure ERS is meeting staff’s needs, prompting employees to call ERS “friendly,” “flexible” and “supportive.” We focus on the following factors that we believe contribute to a positive work environment:
- Well-being – High-quality health insurance and programs to support physical, emotional and financial wellness
- Communications – Bottom-up, top-down and lateral communications for an informed workforce
- Internal and external community-building – Activities to engage with each other and the larger community
- Balance – Hybrid work locations and flexible hours
- Collaboration – Proactive sharing of ideas, knowledge and experience
- Professional growth – Training, education and opportunity to advance
- Workspace - Comfortable, appealing and modern offices
