Values
- Love
- At its core, health care is about a relationship between human beings. It is not merely a transactional relationship, where one person purchases a service that another person provides. It is a partnership that at its best makes each person in that partnership feel loved.
There are many kinds of love — the ancient Greeks identified as many as eight. When we talk about love as a value in health care, we’re not referring to romantic love or the love that we feel for our families. Love, in this sense, is a deep appreciation of the value and importance of another person, the knowledge that my well being and your well being are interconnected. Love encompasses many concepts, including empathy, compassion, respect, caring — and it is more than any one of those.
