GU was founded in 1993 by Dr. Bill Vaughan when he created North America’s first energy gel in order to help his daughter more efficiently fuel for ultra-marathons. Sick and tired of chalky, cement-like energy bars during long races, Laura inspired her father’s efforts of making a carbohydrate based gel that would provide 45 minutes of easily digestible energy. Dr. Vaughan added electrolytes to aid in hydration, and amino acids to help prevent muscle fatigue and add focus.
Since 1993, Dr. Vaughan’s son Brian has taken over as Chief Endurance Officer and continues to lead the expansion of the product line. GU has added GU Chomps, a chewable equivalent of GU Energy Gel, GU Brew, a line of hydration and recovery drinks, and Roctane Ultra Endurance, a line of products specifically formulated for hard training and racing. To this day GU remains committed to producing high quality sports nutrition to help athletes reach their highest potential.
