Why the Top Workplaces for Nursing award matters

As the healthcare industry faces unprecedented challenges, creating positive work environments for nurses has never been more crucial. Consider these trends:

Mental health impact

  • A healthy, supportive workplace is essential. According to Nurse.com’s 2024 Nurse Salary and Work-Life Report, 17% of nurses report that their work negatively impacts their mental health.

Nursing workforce shortages

  • The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) estimated that more than 600,000 registered nurses (RNs) will leave the workplace by 2027. (NCSBN, April 2023)
  • Nurses are part of a demographic retirement wave, with approximately one million nurses 50 years or older and nearly 60 percent of nurses over 40. Additionally, more than 20 percent of nurses plan to retire within the next five years, adding to the depletion of the current nursing faculty pool. (U.S. Chamber of Commerce, January 2024)

Burnout crisis

  • Burnout is a leading cause of workforce attrition, with more than 50% of nurses feeling emotionally drained or burned out multiple times a week. Poor working conditions, feeling undervalued, and inadequate compensation are frequently cited reasons for leaving the profession. (Becker’s Hospital Review, April 2023)
  • An estimated 188,000+ RNs under age 40 intend to exit by 2025 due to stress, burnout, and dissatisfaction. (NCSBN, April 2023)
