Additional Culture Details

•    As an organization comprised of an 85 percent female workforce, Bon Secours Virginia is dedicated to the advancement of women at all levels of our company. Fifty percent of our corporate executives are female, as are 13 out of 21 Board of Directors members. Our commitment to women in leadership truly starts at the top; In 2016, Toni Ardabell was promoted to CEO of Bon Secours Virginia, the largest of Bon Secours’ local systems.

•    Bon Secours has built a culture of “liberating the potential” of its employees. To do this means our managers and leaders are taught to look for high achievers and find ways to support their careers. In one way or another, almost every Bon Secours employee is mentored through our performance, planning and review process, providing twice yearly performance reviews and identifying high-performing employees. An outcome is the identification of our High Potentials, defined as leaders who demonstrate consistently strong performance, are engaged with the organization and have the potential to rise to senior leadership roles. We support these employees as they advance in the health system.

•    The health system launched Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), one of the only nonprofit organizations in the country to do so. We currently offer ERGs for emerging leaders, those with experience or interest in the military, employees with disabilities and those interested in LGBTQ issues.

•    Bon Secours wants diversity in its workforce at all levels. Building a grassroots pipeline to foster relationships and talent, our recruiters are trained in unconscious bias screening. We attend multiple conferences throughout the year, and participate in a virtual career fair hosted by MinorityNurses.com. We partner with a vendor to daily advertise jobs on diverse websites, including about 90 websites especially for women, minorities, people with disabilities, veterans and additional diverse populations, as well as on Facebook and LinkedIn. As a result, in 2016, 40 percent of new hires systemwide were people of color and 81 percent were women.
