VGM Group, Inc. provides business services across the U.S. and Canada, primarily to health care businesses and organizations, private clubs, golf courses, restaurants and casinos. Its services include contracting for group purchasing, specialty purchasing programs, live and web-based education, managing health costs and services, website development, insurance, online and print marketing, government advocacy and specialty consulting. The late Van G. Miller founded VGM in 1986. The company is best known for its work in the home medical equipment industry, where it is a nationally recognized brand and the largest company of its kind. VGM is headquartered in Waterloo, where over 90% of its employees work. Other offices include Atlanta, Ga.; Overland Park, Kan.; Tampa, Fla.; North Liberty, Iowa; Scottsdale, Ariz.; Morristown, N.J.; and Toronto, Ontario (Canada). Its business is nationwide and over 95% of revenues are generated from customers outside of Iowa. In 2005, VGM implemented an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), and on June 3, 2008, VGM became a 100 percent employee-owned company.
VGM associates pose for a picture with Daisy and her new dad, Bobby Henline. Daisy is a Goldendoodle with a very special purpose. She was owned by VGM's founder, the late Van G. Miller. After Van's passing, his family decided they wanted Daisy to be a gift to someone in need and transitioned her to Retrieving Freedom. Retrieving Freedom is a non-profit organization in Waverly that trains service dogs to be placed in the homes of veterans, children with autism and those with diabetes.
For one-month, VGM looked the other way at branding guidelines and added pink to its company colors to honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In October, the company offered pink hair extensions for purchase with the proceeds going to Beyond Pink, a local volunteer group that assists women going through cancer. Other activities included a 'Tree of Hope' to leave words of encouragement for those impacted by cancer and pink ribbons and educational resources were handed out to employees.
VGM Club's Member Services team visited the Northeast Iowa Food Bank to help pack more than 1000 bags to support its BackPack Program. The program provides non-perishable, nutritious, kid-friendly, shelf stable food and drink to students throughout a 16-county area. Teachers from schools in the service area are able to discreetly place the bags in the backpacks of children who need the resource when school lunches are not available during breaks.
With nearly 800 employees located in Waterloo, VGM's corporate headquarters, reasons to have food days are quite frequent. Whether celebrating ESOP month or just having a company-wide food day just because, employee-owners often list food days as one of their favorite benefits of working at VGM.
